Tuesday’s Topic: Occupy DC

Good Morning Toughtalkerz!  The National Parks Service set a deadline this week and stated they will begin to enforce a ban on camping in two Washington DC parks.  This ban was adapted to directly affect the protesters of the Occupy DC Movement, who have been camping out 24 hours a day in protest of the greed and excess displayed by Wall street – as well as the state that our Government, and the widening differences of the “haves” and the “have nots”…(ie: the 1% versus the 99%).  The Park Service officials said protesters would be allowed to remain in the park around the clock and keep up their tents as long as one side of the tent remains open at all times so they can see in.  My question to the park service would be…What is this going to solve??  The protesters will just sleep during the day and stay up at night.  I believe there has to be some dialog between the Occupy Movement and the Park Service to arrive at a consensus because the health and safety of the area is now coming into question with the infestation of bugs and rodents (who have started their own Occupy Movement).  We live in the Greatest Country in the world, where our freedoms and liberties gives us the right to protest and stand up for our beliefs….so allow The Occupy Movement to do so…in peace!!

It’s Monday: Steven Cephas, Child Killer

Good Morning Toughtalkerz……I have a question for the District Attorney’s office of Washington DC and maybe even Judge William Jackson as well…are all cases worthy of a plea agreement? I’m asking that question because Judge Jackson accepted a plea and sentenced Steven Cephas on last Friday and I believe an injustice occurred.  Mr. Steven Cephas pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter and received 15 years in prison.  With that amount of time issued for such a charge you would believe justice was served and we can move on to the next case right??  WRONG!  Allow me to explain the crime that Mr. Cephas was arrested for and allowed to plead guilty to…then you can decide for yourself…should this man have been offered a plea or prosecuted to the full extent of the law?  On November 8, 2010, Mr. Cephas was home playing video games when his then girlfriend’s toddler son Dominic Kingsbury Jr. awoke and began to disturb Mr. Cephas.  He became angry and severely beat Dominic.  He hit him in the head and threw him against a wall.  Dominic was rushed to the hospital where he was pronounced dead.  An autopsy of the toddler revealed that the boy had suffered blunt force injuries, hemorrhages, lacerations of the intestine and liver, and a spinal cord contusions.  So again I ask…is this a case worthy of  prosecution?  Or was a plea acceptable in such a case?  I know there are always circumstances that may occur when you’re trying a case, and any verdict that would remove a person that would carry out such a heinous act on a child from society is always a positive…but with this one I believe that the chance at trying this case should have been taken.  Mr. Cephas received a 15 year sentence and with a pending probation violation on a previous charge he will have 22 years of total jail confinement.  In my opinion, that’s not enough!!  He should have been tried and convicted of murder…never to experience freedom again.  I believe Dominic would have wanted it that way also!!!!

Friday’s Forum: Can Men & Women Be “Just Friends”?

Dear toughtalker,
Can men and women be just friends?  I, as well as some of my girlfriends have male friends – that are just that – friends.  And yet we met some guys at a bar the other day that insisted that men and women can’t be JUST FRIENDS.  They said that all of your male friends want to sleep with you…period.  Is that true? I have male friends that have never tried anything and it’s hard for me to accept they may have other motives.

Good Morning Toughtalker,

Thank You for submitting your letter.  Let me start off by saying…Of course men and women can be just friends…and anyone who can’t grasp this concept has a lot of growth and personal maturing to do!!!  Now there are some men who will begin a friendship with a woman with the hope of maybe, just maybe, that one day after a break up with a boyfriend or a night on the town with one too many alcoholic beverages…that maybe one thing may lead to another…and your relationship may take that turn that they had envisioned and hoped for.  And as strange as this may sound, some men will wait years for the possibility of this happening!  But most MEN that I have encountered are more than capable of having a platonic relationship with a female.  And the men who say otherwise…are men by age and gender only…but are still boys in their maturity.  All men don’t think with their private areas when it pertains to friendships!!!  HAVE A WONDERFUL WEEKEND!!!

Thoughts On Thursdays: Gov. Jan Brewer

Arizona Governor Jan Brewer engaged in what some would call a “testy” or categorize as a heated conversation at the Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport on yesterday.  So with whom would the Governor of Arizona be engaged in such a public display with??  None other than The President of the United States Barack Obama.  The argument stems from a book that Gov. Brewer authored and released in November of last year titled: “Scorpions for Breakfast: My Fight Against Special Interest, Liberal Media and Cynical Politicos to Secure America’s Border” in which Gov Brewer describes an Oval Office meeting between The President and herself that was supposed to diffuse some feelings that were beginning to become harsh towards the Governor and the Administration.  The focus of the meeting was on their opposing views of Arizona’s immigration laws in contrast to The Administration’s policies.  But in the Governor’s book, she depicts the meeting and describes the President as being “condescending”, “professorial”, and “lecturing” (claims The President and his Administration vehemently deny).  So Wednesday the President arrives in Phoenix…and was greeted by Governor Brewer…and was presented with a letter supposedly inviting The President back to Phoenix for a meeting.  And this is where the dispute begins.  President Obama and Governor Brewer engage in a heated discussion where you can see Gov. Brewer at one point shaking her finger in the face of The President of the United States!!!  And I’m here to state that no matter your party affiliation or which side of the aisle (Republican, Democrat, Independent) you may be on…He is our President and you are a sitting member of congress..have some respect for our Commander and Chief!!  The world is watching Governor Brewer.  Our Country is already viewed by some as being divided and selfish in the world’s eyes.  Your display on Wednesday only provided fuel to that fire.  You can dislike a person’s political views, you can even dislike the man…But you have to RESPECT THE OFFICE!!!  JUST MY THOUGHTS PEOPLE!!!

What Were They Thinking Wednesdays: Michael Babatunde Ayodele

For the second time in less than two weeks, an arrest was made by Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers at Dulles International Airport in Virginia.  Michael Babatunde Ayodele….WHAT WERE YOU THINKING??  Mr. Ayodele 19, of Queens, New York  was detained and subsequently arrested on attempting to smuggle 86 pellets of a substance that was later proved to be heroin.  How did Mr. Ayodele smuggle said substance on a plane from Nigeria to Virginia you ask??  In his stomach (YES, inside his stomach).  A CBP Supervisor stated that Mr. Ayodele sparked suspicion when his story on the nature of his visit to the country of Nigeria changed several times and was littered with inconsistencies.  While in custody Mr. Ayodele asked to use the restroom and when doing so tried to get rid of the substance that he carried inside him.  He passed 55 thumb-sized pellets, then tried to flush them…not knowing that the water to the bathroom had already been shut off…leaving him in a state of panic.  “So what did Mr. Ayodele do” you ask??  He tried to hide them in the wall of the facility (genius…i know).  Mr. Ayodele was then taken to a local hospital were he passed an additional 31 pellets totaling 86 pellets…1,089 grams of pure heroin (with a street value of $500,000).  Now he sits in a jail awaiting his next court appearance (which he is lucky to have).  Mr. Ayodele do you know if one…just one…of those pellets would have ruptured…your family and friends wouldn’t have to worry about a next court date…or accepting collect calls from you.  Their worries could have been much more severe…like planning a funeral for you.  Because with the purity of the substance and the amount you were carrying, the results could have been FATAL!!  So Mr. Ayodele upon reading this…just know that you will have years to think about the consequences of your actions… and also know that you’re lucky to still have the opportunity to do so!  Mr. Michael Babatunde Ayodele…WHAT WERE YOU THINKING??

It’s Monday: Tom Brady

The New England Patriots are on their way to the Super Bowl…again!  And with every season that goes by Tom Brady continues to redefine the position of Quarterback.  And even though he didn’t have a “vintage” Tom Brady type of game in the victory on Sunday over The Baltimore Ravens, his leadership and commitment to his team embodies the player he has been throughout his 12 years in the NFL.  With all of his accomplishments thus far, I believe the biggest representation of his perseverance was displayed on draft night, the year 2000.  Mr. Brady wasn’t chosen until round 6 of the draft…Pick 199 (Which has turned out to be Patriot fans’ favorite number..I’m sure).  And ever since then he has left General Managers across the NFL second guessing and questioning their decision-making capabilities… asking themselves…how could we not see his potential??  Since being named the starting QB of the Patriots the team has appeared in 5 Super bowls (winning 3 of them) and with his heroic performances, Mr. Brady has begun to be mentioned in the pantheon of “Greatest Quarterbacks Who Ever Lived” discussions…along with his childhood idol San Francisco 49ers QB Joe Montana…who are the only players in NFL History to win Most Valuable Player and Super Bowl MVP awards multiple times (2 NFL MVP…2 Superbowl MVP).  And if the Patriots get the victory on February 5, 2012…Tom will join Joe with 4 Superbowl Championships as well!!  So Mr. Brady you are to be commended not only for your stellar play on the field but your hard work ethic that has enabled you to rise from pick 199 to possibly #1.  That’s #1 in the history of quarterbacks…when its all said and done!!!

Friday’s Forum: Am I The Best You’ve Ever Had?

Dear toughtalkdc,
Do you recommend divulging your past in relationships? Im no saint, but far from the worst. However I wonder sometimes if men really want to hear the truth! I have had men ask me if they were the best…the ones who ask arent. I have had men ask if they are the biggest…same thing…the person asking never is. I used to be honest, and I got a lot of angry men and hurt feelings. But when I lie…im annoyed with myself!!! How should a person answer questions about previous relationships and risque encounters?

**********************************************************

Good Morning Toughtalker,

Thank You for submitting your letter.  I believe sharing past relationships is a very taboo topic.  The men that you’re encountering really don’t want to hear the truth.  They want to hear they’re the best (even if they’re far from it).  They want to hear they’re the biggest (even if they’re not too well endowed). You stated in your letter some of your past encounters inquired about certain aspects of your sexual history and didn’t like the response, at all…so those men didn’t want the truth!!  Some men have real esteem issues and I’m guessing these men did…because no self-assured guy would even ask those questions.  A man who is confident about himself doesn’t need verbal validation from his partner, he will receive that without even asking (from her response during and after sex).  So there would be no need for the “Am I the best or biggest?” question.  Just knowing she enjoyed the act is rewarding enough for him.  I believe the guys you’re dating have issues that’s far beyond anything that a .. yes you are the best or a OMG your the biggest ever answer could ever fix, so why even try?  The next time you are confronted with these types of questions I would state…let’s leave the past where it is..in the past…and try and move on.  If he insists on digging deeper for the validation he is seeking, then tell him the truth.  If he is that ego driven then maybe he will try and become the best…and that could be fun!!!  Or maybe he will react in a negative way.  And if he does…you didn’t need a man (boy) like that anyway!!  But if you can go without answering the questions then do so, because the truth really isn’t what these guys are seeking anyway!!  HAVE A WONDERFUL WEEKEND!!!!
